What is Blood Glucose Monitoring?
Blood glucose monitoring is the systematic, regular measurement and tracking of blood sugar levels (glucose concentration in the blood). It is a cornerstone of diabetes mellitus management, helping to detect and prevent dangerous low blood sugar episodes (hypoglycemia) and high blood sugar episodes (hyperglycemia) before they become serious. Regular glucose monitoring may also be necessary in metabolic disorders, during pregnancy, or around certain medical procedures.
Why is Blood Glucose Monitoring Important?
Chronically elevated or highly fluctuating blood glucose levels damage blood vessels and nerves over time. Long-term complications such as diabetic retinopathy (eye damage), diabetic nephropathy (kidney damage), neuropathy (nerve damage), and increased cardiovascular risk can be significantly delayed or prevented through good blood sugar control. Methods of Blood Glucose Monitoring
Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose (SMBG)
With self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG), the individual uses a lancet device to obtain a small drop of capillary blood – typically from a fingertip – and measures the glucose value with a portable blood glucose meter. This method is widely used, cost-effective, and provides immediate results.
Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM)
Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) uses a small sensor inserted just beneath the skin to measure glucose levels in the interstitial fluid continuously – typically every 1 to 5 minutes. Values are transmitted wirelessly to a receiver device or smartphone. CGM systems can trigger alarms for impending hypo- or hyperglycemia and enable detailed trend analysis.
Flash Glucose Monitoring (FGM)
Flash glucose monitoring (FGM, e.g., FreeStyle Libre) is a variant of CGM in which glucose values are read by briefly scanning the sensor. Unlike traditional CGM systems, there is no automatic continuous transmission – readings are taken on demand.
HbA1c Measurement
The HbA1c value (glycated hemoglobin) reflects the average blood glucose level over the past 2 to 3 months and is an important long-term parameter in diabetes care. It is determined in a clinical setting and complements daily self-monitoring.
Target Values in Blood Glucose Monitoring
Recommended target values may vary depending on the condition, age, and individual circumstances. As a general guideline, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends:
- Fasting blood glucose: 80–130 mg/dL (4.4–7.2 mmol/L)
- Postprandial blood glucose (2 hours after meals): below 180 mg/dL (10.0 mmol/L)
- HbA1c: individualized, commonly below 7.0% (53 mmol/mol) for many adults

Blood glucose monitoring is particularly important for:
- People with type 1 diabetes (insulin-dependent)
