Essential amino acids are amino acids that the body cannot produce itself and must therefore be obtained from food.
Essential amino acids play a crucial role in many biological processes, including the formation of proteins, the synthesis of hormones and enzymes and the regulation of metabolic processes. In total, there are nine essential amino acids that are important for humans.
Leucine, one of these amino acids, is particularly important for muscle metabolism and protein biosynthesis, as it can promote insulin production. Isoleucine contributes to energy production, immune function and blood sugar regulation and is particularly active in the muscles. Valine supports muscle regeneration and repair and plays a role in growth and energy production.
Lysine is crucial for collagen production, the immune system and calcium absorption, while methionine has an important function as a building block for many proteins and has antioxidant properties. Phenylalanine is converted into tyrosine, which is necessary for the production of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and adrenaline. Threonine supports protein biosynthesis and the production of antibodies, while tryptophan is a precursor for serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates well-being and sleep. Finally, histidine is important for tissue growth and repair and plays a role in the formation of histamine, which is important for the immune response.
A balanced diet that includes protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, eggs, dairy products, pulses, nuts and seeds usually ensures that the body is adequately supplied with these essential amino acids. In certain situations, such as intensive training, stress or certain illnesses, supplementation with essential amino acids can be beneficial to support regeneration and muscle building.
