Lactobacillus is a genus of probiotic lactic acid bacteria that occur naturally in the human intestine.lactic acid bacteria that occur naturally in the human intestine, on the skin, in the vaginal flora and in the mouth. They play an essential role in maintaining a healthy microbiome and are among the most important representatives of beneficial intestinal bacteria. Their main task is to convert sugar into lactic acid, thereby stabilising the microbiome./strong>, acidify the local pH environment and displace pathogenic germs.
Various strains - such as Lactobacillus rhamnosus, L. plantarum, L. reuteri or L. acidophilus - are specifically used in medical probiotics and functional foods. They are not only involved in digestion and nutrient absorption, but also actively contribute to strengthening the immune system, to the reduction of inflammation and to the protection of mucous membranes. Lactobacilli are particularly important in intestinal health, as they can help to reduce dysbiosis caused by antibiotics, irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhoea or infections such as bacterial vaginosis.
In addition, recent studies show that certain Lactobacillus strains can also produce neuroactive substances such as GABA and can influence mood, stress resilience and sleep via the gut-brain axis. Lactobacilli are increasingly being used in functional therapy concepts as part of holistic microbiome therapy, for example after antibiotics, for chronic intestinal diseases or for mucosal regeneration. However, the effectiveness depends heavily on the strain used and the dose.
