A lipid panel (also called a lipid profile) is a group of blood tests that measure the levels of various fats (lipids) in the bloodstream. The results provide important information about a person´s risk of developing heart disease, atherosclerosis, or stroke. It is one of the most commonly ordered screening tests in preventive medicine and general practice.
What Values Are Measured?
A standard lipid panel typically includes the following measurements:
- Total cholesterol: The overall amount of all cholesterol types in the blood.
- LDL cholesterol (Low-Density Lipoprotein): Often called bad cholesterol because high levels contribute to plaque buildup in the arteries.
- HDL cholesterol (High-Density Lipoprotein): Often called good cholesterol because it helps transport excess cholesterol back to the liver for removal.
- Triglycerides: Blood fats that serve as energy reserves. Elevated levels are associated with increased cardiovascular risk.
- VLDL cholesterol (Very-Low-Density Lipoprotein): Usually calculated from triglyceride levels; also contributes to arterial plaque formation.
When Is a Lipid Panel Performed?
A lipid panel is recommended in the following situations:
- Routine health screenings in adults
- Presence of risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or obesity
- Family history of heart disease or lipid disorders
- Monitoring of known hypercholesterolemia or hypertriglyceridemia
- Follow-up during lipid-lowering therapy (e.g., statins)
How Is the Test Performed?
For accurate results, patients are typically asked to fast for 9 to 12 hours before the blood draw, as food intake -- especially a fatty meal -- can significantly affect triglyceride levels. Blood is drawn from a vein, usually in the inner elbow. Results are generally available within a few hours to a few days.
Normal Values and Interpretation
Reference ranges may vary slightly between laboratories and clinical guidelines. General target values include:
- Total cholesterol: below 200 mg/dL (desirable)
- LDL cholesterol: below 130 mg/dL (below 70 mg/dL for high-risk patients)
- HDL cholesterol: above 40 mg/dL for men, above 50 mg/dL for women
- Triglycerides: below 150 mg/dL
Results must always be interpreted in the context of the overall clinical picture, including additional risk factors such as age, sex, smoking status, and blood pressure.
Clinical Significance
Abnormal lipid levels -- especially elevated LDL cholesterol or low HDL cholesterol -- are well-established risk factors for cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease, heart attack, and stroke. Early detection and treatment of lipid disorders can significantly reduce the risk of these conditions. Treatment options include lifestyle changes (dietary adjustments, increased physical activity) and, if necessary, medication such as statins or other lipid-lowering agents.
