It is a key component of the limbic system – the evolutionarily ancient part of the brain responsible for processing emotions, instincts, and memory. The human brain contains two amygdalae, one in each hemisphere.

The amygdala is situated directly anterior to the hippocampus in the medial temporal lobe. It is composed of several functionally distinct nuclear groups:
