Angocin Anti-Infekt N is a herbal medicinal product containing horseradish and nasturtium, used to treat urinary tract and respiratory infections.
What is Angocin?
Angocin Anti-Infekt N is a herbal medicinal product used in the treatment of mild bacterial infections of the urinary tract and the respiratory system. It is available without a prescription and is widely used in Germany and other German-speaking countries. The product is based on two natural active compounds: nasturtium extract (from Tropaeolum majus) and horseradish extract (from Armoracia rusticana). Both extracts contain bioactive substances known as isothiocyanates, which are responsible for the antimicrobial effects of the preparation.
Mechanism of Action
The efficacy of Angocin is based on glucosinolates found in nasturtium and horseradish. These compounds are enzymatically converted into isothiocyanates in the body. These bioactive molecules have demonstrated the following properties in laboratory and clinical studies:
- Antibacterial: Isothiocyanates inhibit the growth of various bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, and other typical pathogens causing urinary tract and respiratory infections.
- Antiviral: There is evidence of inhibitory activity against certain viruses.
- Antifungal: Isothiocyanates can also suppress fungal growth.
- Anti-inflammatory: The preparation supports the reduction of inflammatory responses in the body.
Because isothiocyanates are excreted through urine and exhaled air, they exert their effects directly on the mucous membranes of the urinary and respiratory tracts.
Indications
Angocin Anti-Infekt N is primarily used for the following conditions:
- Urinary tract infections: Uncomplicated infections of the bladder (cystitis) and urethra
- Sinusitis: Inflammation of the paranasal sinuses
- Bronchitis: Inflammation of the bronchi with cough and mucus production
- Upper respiratory tract infections: Common colds, mild pharyngitis
The preparation can be used as a standalone therapy for mild infections or as a complementary treatment alongside antibiotic therapy.
Dosage and Administration
Angocin Anti-Infekt N is available as film-coated tablets. The recommended dosage for adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older is typically 3 times 3 tablets daily (i.e., 9 tablets per day) during acute infections. The tablets should be taken with a sufficient amount of fluid. Adequate fluid intake supports the renal and urinary excretion of the active compounds, enhancing their local effect.
The duration of treatment depends on the clinical course and should be discussed with a physician or pharmacist. If symptoms do not improve or worsen within a few days, medical advice should be sought.
Side Effects
Angocin is generally well tolerated. Possible side effects may include:
- Gastrointestinal discomfort, nausea, or heartburn (especially when taken on an empty stomach)
- Digestive complaints such as bloating or diarrhea
- Rarely, allergic reactions (e.g., skin rash)
Angocin should not be taken if there is a known hypersensitivity to nasturtium, horseradish, or any other ingredient of the preparation.
Contraindications and Warnings
Angocin Anti-Infekt N should not be used in the following cases:
- Gastric ulcers or gastric irritation
- Kidney disease (as the active compounds are excreted via the kidneys)
- Thyroid disorders (horseradish may influence thyroid function)
- Children under 12 years of age (without medical recommendation)
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding (use only after consulting a physician)
