Peripheral arterial disease (PAD)
Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a condition in which the arteries – particularly in the legs – become narrowed or completely blocked due to deposits (atherosclerosis). This leads to reduced blood flow and can cause pain when walking, known as intermittent claudication.
Arterial blood gas analysis
Arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis is a laboratory test in which blood is drawn from an artery. It measures the oxygen and carbon dioxide content as well as the pH of the blood. It is an important diagnostic tool in pulmonary conditions and in critical care medicine.
Atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis refers to the hardening and thickening of artery walls due to the buildup of fats, calcium, and connective tissue. It is the leading cause of heart attack and stroke worldwide.
Arterial vs. venous
In medicine, a clear distinction is made between arterial and venous structures or processes:
- Arterial blood is oxygen-rich and bright red in color.
- Venous blood is oxygen-poor and dark red in color.
- An arterial bleed is characterized by strong, pulsating blood flow and requires immediate medical attention.
- A venous bleed flows more steadily and is generally easier to control.
Clinical significance
The term arterial is relevant across virtually all medical specialties – from cardiology and angiology to intensive care medicine. Diseases of the arterial system are among the leading causes of death worldwide.
