What is PFA?
PFA stands for Perfluoroalkoxyalkane (also referred to as Perfluoroalkoxy polymer) and is a fully fluorinated thermoplastic belonging to the family of fluoropolymers. PFA was developed as a more easily processable alternative to PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene, commonly known as Teflon), combining excellent chemical and thermal properties with improved moldability.
Properties and Composition
PFA consists of a carbon-fluorine backbone with incorporated perfluoroalkoxy side groups. This molecular structure gives the material exceptional characteristics:
- Chemical resistance: PFA is resistant to virtually all acids, bases, solvents, and aggressive chemicals.
- Thermal stability: Operating temperatures of up to approximately 260 degrees Celsius are possible.
- Electrical insulation: PFA has outstanding dielectric properties.
- Non-stick surface: Similar to PTFE, almost nothing adheres to its surface.
- Biocompatibility: PFA is considered biologically inert and is approved for many medical applications.
- Transparency: Unlike PTFE, PFA is optically clear, facilitating visual inspection.

In medicine and healthcare, PFA is used across many areas due to its purity and biocompatibility:
Medical Technology
- Tubing and lines for infusion systems and catheters
- Coatings for medical instruments and implants
- Containers and valves in the pharmaceutical industry
- Laboratory equipment for diagnostic testing
Pharmaceutical Manufacturing
In the production of pharmaceuticals, PFA is used for containers, tubing, and equipment that come into contact with sensitive active substances. The extremely low extraction rate of PFA prevents material components from migrating into the drug product and causing contamination.
Food Contact
PFA is approved for food contact applications and is used in food processing for coatings, conveyor belts, and containers. There is no evidence that PFA releases health-hazardous substances under normal conditions of use.
PFA and Health Safety
PFA belongs to the group of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). While many PFAS compounds are under scrutiny due to their persistence in the environment and in the human body, high-molecular-weight fluoropolymers such as PFA are considered significantly less concerning than short-chain PFAS according to current scientific consensus. PFA is chemically very stable, is not absorbed by the body, and is regarded as safe when used appropriately.
Nevertheless, it is recommended not to heat PFA products above their maximum temperature of approximately 260 degrees Celsius, as decomposition products can form at higher temperatures that may pose health risks.
Differences from PTFE and Other Fluoropolymers
Compared to PTFE, PFA offers the advantage of being melt-processable (thermoplastic processability), enabling the production of more complex shapes and thinner-walled components. Compared to FEP (fluorinated ethylene propylene), PFA offers higher temperature resistance.
