Mechanism of Action

The molecule captures this high-energy radiation and converts it into harmless thermal energy before it can penetrate and damage skin cells. This protects the skin from sunburn and reduces the risk of UV-induced skin damage.
It is important to note that phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid provides protection only against UV-B radiation and does not filter UV-A rays. For broad-spectrum sun protection, it is typically combined with additional UV-A filters in cosmetic formulations.

Environmental and Health Considerations
In recent years, there has been growing debate about whether chemical UV filters such as phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid can penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream. Studies conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) demonstrated that certain chemical UV filters are detectable in the blood at low concentrations after topical application.
