Pimples are inflammatory skin blemishes that are usually caused by blocked sebaceous glands and a subsequent bacterial inflammation.
Pimples - when the skin rebels
Pimples occur more frequently during puberty in particular, but can also be triggered in adulthood by hormonal fluctuations, stress or a disrupted skin barrier. They usually appear on the face, back or chest - i.e. where there are particularly many sebaceous glands.
Causes include excessive sebum production, an unhealthy diet, environmental pollution or hormonal changes. Intestinal health also plays a key role: if the intestinal flora is out of balance, this can have a negative impact on the skin. In naturopathy, the skin is often regarded as the ""third detoxification organ"" - a disturbed metabolism or poor liver function can therefore also show on the skin.Active ingredients such as salicylic acid, zinc, tea tree oil and lactoferrin have proven effective in the treatment of spots. The latter has been shown to have an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect without damaging the skin barrier. In addition, an anti-inflammatory diet, probiotic preparations and consistent, mild skin care help to improve the appearance of the skin in the long term.
Typical causes of spots:
- Hormonal changes (puberty, menstrual cycle, pregnancy)
- Unhealthy diet (e.g. sugar, dairy products, trans fats)
- Impaired intestinal flora and inflammation in the body
- Stress, lack of sleep and oxidative stress
- Wrong cosmetic products (comedogenic)
- Environmental factors such as particulate matter or masks
Treatment options:
- Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory care (e.g. with lactoferrin, zinc, salicylic acid)
- Building up the gut with probiotics and a gut-friendly diet
- Avoid triggers such as sugar and highly processed foods
- Dermatological therapies for severe or treatment-resistant acne
- Supportive measures: Omega-3 fatty acids, micronutrients, liver support
Prevention:
- Mild, regular cleaning without alcohol or aggressive surfactants
- Healthy diet with a focus on fresh, anti-inflammatory foods
- Sufficient fluids and stable stress management
- Refrain from squeezing pimples (risk of inflammation)
- Change pillowcases, towels and remove make-up regularly
