Football Hold (Clutch Hold)
The baby is positioned under the arm of the mother, with the nursing pillow providing support underneath. This position is particularly suitable after a cesarean section or for mothers with larger breasts.
Side-Lying Position
The nursing pillow can be used as a support for both mother and baby while lying down, enabling relaxed nighttime breastfeeding.
Materials and Selection Criteria
When choosing a nursing pillow, the following factors should be considered:
- Filling: Common fillings include microbeads (EPS), polyester fibers, or natural materials such as spelt husks. Microbeads adapt flexibly to body contours, while natural fillings offer superior breathability.
- Cover: The cover should be removable and machine-washable. Materials that have been tested for harmful substances, ideally certified under the OEKO-TEX Standard 100, are recommended.
- Shape and size: The choice depends on the preferred breastfeeding position and the body size of the mother.

From a medical perspective, a nursing pillow can help prevent common breastfeeding problems. An ergonomically correct breastfeeding position reduces the risk of mastitis (breast inflammation), blocked milk ducts, and sore nipples. After a cesarean delivery, the pillow can also reduce pressure on the surgical incision by keeping the weight of the baby away from the abdominal area.
Safety Considerations
A nursing pillow should never be used as a sole sleeping surface for the baby, as it may increase the risk of suffocation. In line with guidelines for the prevention of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), no loose pillows or cushions should be placed in the sleeping area of the infant.
