Irritation of the appendix causes mild discomfort in the lower right abdomen and can be a harbinger of appendicitis. Find out here which symptoms are typical and which measures can help.
An irritation of the appendix is a nonspecific, incipient irritation of the vermiform appendix, which is located at the beginning of the large intestine in the right lower abdomen. It is considered a precursor or milder form of appendicitis and can be reversible if measures are taken in good time. The symptoms are often non-specific, but can herald serious progressions and should therefore not be ignored.
In contrast to acute appendicitis, appendicitis is usually mild, without fever or severe pain, and can be positively influenced in the early stages by observation, rest, diet and naturopathic support. Common causes are irritation caused by digestible residues, faecal blockages, lymphatic tissue reactions during infections or increased gas accumulation. Disrupted intestinal flora or a high stress level can also put a strain on the right lower abdomen in sensitive people. To relieve an irritated appendix, we recommend a light diet, sufficient fluid intake and warmth as well as rest. However, in the event of persistent discomfort, increasing pain or accompanying symptoms such as fever or nausea, a doctor should be consulted immediately to determine whether acute appendicitis is developing. In naturopathy, antispasmodic plant substances, intestinal regulation and anti-inflammatory measures such as compresses or teas are used.Typical symptoms of appendicitis:
-
Pressure or pulling sensation in the right lower abdomen
-
Mild, alternating abdominal pain
-
Discomfort, flatulence or bloating
-
Slight loss of appetite
-
Nausea without vomiting
-
No or only slightly increased fever
Possible causes:
-
Constipation, lack of fibre
-
Intestinal infections or viral infections with lymphatic reaction
-
Irritable bowel syndrome with localisation in the right lower abdomen
-
Disorders of the microbiota
-
Stress-related gastrointestinal reactions
Recommended measures (early and supportive):
-
Warming applications (e.g. hot water bottle)
-
Rest, rest and light exercise
-
Herbal support: camomile, lemon balm, fennel
-
Gentle intestinal relief with psyllium or linseed
-
Observation of the course over 24-48 hours
-
Medical clarification in case of deterioration
