Risks and Limitations

- Not all patients are suitable candidates -- those with severe anemia, active infections, or significant cardiovascular disease may be excluded.
- The process is more complex and resource-intensive than using donated blood from a blood bank.
Procedure and Preparation
Before a preoperative autologous blood donation program begins, the patient undergoes a medical evaluation to confirm suitability. Donations are typically scheduled at weekly intervals in the weeks leading up to surgery. Blood is stored refrigerated or frozen until the day of the procedure.
