What Is an Abdominal Ultrasound?
Abdominal ultrasound – also known as abdominal sonography or abdominal ultrasonography – is a non-invasive imaging procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to visualise the organs and structures within the abdominal cavity. The technique is painless, does not involve radiation, and is considered one of the safest and most widely used diagnostic tools in modern medicine.
How Does the Procedure Work?
A handheld device called a transducer or probe is placed on the patient´s skin, which has been coated with a special conductive gel to improve sound transmission. The probe emits high-frequency sound waves that penetrate the abdomen and are reflected back by internal organs and tissues at different rates. A computer processes these reflected signals in real time, generating a visual image – called a sonogram – on a monitor.
Which Organs Can Be Examined?
An abdominal ultrasound allows clinicians to assess a wide range of organs and structures, including:
- Liver (size, texture, cysts, tumours, fatty changes)
- Gallbladder and bile ducts (gallstones, inflammation, obstruction)
- Pancreas (pancreatitis, masses)
- Spleen (enlargement, injury)
- Kidneys and adrenal glands (stones, cysts, tumours)
- Urinary bladder (residual urine volume, stones)
- Major blood vessels (e.g., aorta for aneurysm screening)
- Lymph nodes in the abdominal region
- Free fluid in the abdominal cavity
When Is an Abdominal Ultrasound Performed?
This procedure is used in a wide range of clinical situations, including:
- Unexplained abdominal pain or discomfort
- Suspected gallstones or kidney disease
- Monitoring known abdominal organ conditions
- Evaluation of suspected liver diseases (e.g., cirrhosis, fatty liver)
- Investigation of abdominal swelling or palpable masses
- Assessment after abdominal trauma or surgery
- Routine follow-up in chronic conditions
Preparation for the Examination
For best image quality, patients are typically asked to fast for 6 to 8 hours before the examination. Food and gas in the gastrointestinal tract can obstruct the view of certain organs – particularly the gallbladder and pancreas. Drinking water is usually permitted. A full bladder may be required for certain examinations, such as assessment of the urinary bladder or pelvic organs.
Procedure and Duration
The examination is usually performed with the patient lying down. The clinician applies ultrasound gel to the abdomen and moves the transducer systematically over the abdominal surface. The procedure typically takes between 10 and 30 minutes, depending on the clinical question and complexity of findings. Results can often be discussed immediately after the examination.
Advantages and Limitations
Abdominal ultrasound offers significant advantages: it is radiation-free, cost-effective, readily available, and can be repeated as often as needed without risk. It is also suitable for children, pregnant individuals, and elderly patients. However, the method has limitations. Intestinal gas and obesity can reduce image quality. In such cases, additional imaging such as CT (computed tomography) or MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) may be required for a comprehensive diagnosis.
