Overview of the Nervous System
The human nervous system is divided into two main parts:
- Central Nervous System (CNS): The brain and spinal cord form the body´s control center.
- Peripheral Nervous System (PNS): All nerves outside the brain and spinal cord, transmitting signals between the CNS and the rest of the body.
Neural structures are responsible for almost all bodily functions – from perceiving pain and touch to controlling muscle movements and internal organs.
Neural Supply
Neural supply refers to the network of nerves that provides signals to a specific area of the body. Three types of nerve fibers are distinguished:
- Sensory (afferent) fibers: Carry information such as pain, temperature, and touch from the body to the brain.
- Motor (efferent) fibers: Transmit commands from the brain to the muscles.

Neural Disorders
Conditions affecting neural structures are grouped under the term neuropathies or more broadly as neurological disorders. Common examples include:
- Peripheral neuropathy: Damage to peripheral nerves, often caused by diabetes mellitus, alcohol, or vitamin deficiencies.
- Neuralgia: Sharp or burning pain along a nerve, such as trigeminal neuralgia or sciatica.
- Multiple sclerosis: An autoimmune condition in which the myelin sheaths of neural fibers in the CNS are damaged.
- Carpal tunnel syndrome: Compression of the median nerve at the wrist, causing typical neural symptoms such as numbness and tingling.
Neural Symptoms
Complaints of neural origin can present in many different ways. Typical neural symptoms include:
- Tingling or numbness (paresthesia)
- Burning or stabbing pain
- Muscle weakness or paralysis
- Reduced or absent reflexes
- Coordination difficulties
Diagnosis of Neural Conditions
Several diagnostic procedures are available to examine neural structures:
- Electroneurography (ENG): Measures the conduction velocity of nerves.
- Electromyography (EMG): Assesses the electrical activity of muscles and provides information about neural damage.
- MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging): Imaging technique used to visualize nerves, the spinal cord, and the brain.
- Nerve biopsy: In rare cases, a tissue sample from a nerve is taken and examined microscopically.
Treatment of Neural Disorders
Treatment depends on the underlying cause of the neural dysfunction. Possible therapeutic approaches include:
- Medication: Pain-relieving agents, anticonvulsants, or anti-inflammatory drugs.
- Physiotherapy: To strengthen affected muscles and improve coordination.
- Surgical intervention: For mechanical nerve compression, such as in carpal tunnel syndrome.
- Treatment of the underlying condition: In neuropathies caused by diabetes or vitamin deficiency, addressing the root cause is the primary focus.
