Autophagy is an intracellular biological mechanism by which the body breaks down and recycles damaged cell components and unusable cell structures.
The term autophagy comes from the Greek and means "to eat oneself". In the course of autophagy, the cell encloses harmful material in so-called autophagosomes, which then fuse with lysosomes. These contain enzymes that break down the material into its basic building blocks. The molecules released, such as amino acids, fatty acids and sugars, can then be recycled and reused by the cell. This process is crucial for cell health as it removes harmful substances, increases cell performance and protects them from malfunction. It helps to slow down the ageing process and protects against disease.
Disorders of autophagy are associated with numerous diseases such as Alzheimer, Parkinson's, cancer and diabetes. Autophagy also reduces inflammation by removing substances that could trigger immune reactions. Autophagy is also of great importance in times of nutrient deficiency or fasting, as it supplies the body with energy and thus ensures survival.
An important factor that can stimulate autophagy is spermidine - a substance produced naturally in the body that is also found in small amounts in foods such as wheat germ, soya beans and mature cheese. Studies have shown that spermidine can stimulate the autophagy process at the cellular level. By supporting autophagy, spermidine helps to break down damaged cell components and maintain cell function in the long term.As the body's capacity for autophagy declines with age, it is often associated with anti-ageing strategies to minimise cell damage and improve quality of life.
Autophagy can be specifically promoted through certain lifestyle measures. Fasting, especially intermittent fasting, is one of the most effective ways to activate this process. During periods of fasting, the body switches to cell cleansing, as no new nutrients are supplied from outside. Regular physical activity and a spermidine-rich, ketogenic diet, which is based on the intake of sufficient spermidine and the reduction of carbohydrates, also promote autophagy. In addition, certain nutrients and secondary plant substances such as resveratrol, quercetin or EGCG from green tea have a stimulating effect on this process.
Some preclinical studies also suggest that lactoferrin, a bioactive protein that influences various cellular processes, may promote autophagy in certain models, particularly in the context of neurodegeneration and cell protection mechanisms. Lactoferrin is known for its immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which may help promote cell health.
