The Laboratory Testing Process

- Transport and storage: The sample is transported to the laboratory under defined conditions to prevent any alteration of results.
- Analysis: Automated or manual measurement of the requested parameters using specialized instruments and reagents.

When Is Laboratory Diagnostics Used?
Laboratory tests are applied in many clinical situations:

- For monitoring the course of chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, or heart failure.

Reference Values and Interpretation
Laboratory results are compared against reference ranges, which indicate the values typically found in healthy individuals. Deviations above or below these ranges may indicate a disease, but must always be interpreted in the context of clinical symptoms and additional findings.
Important: A single laboratory value outside the reference range does not necessarily indicate a serious illness. Interpretation is always the responsibility of the treating physician.
Quality Assurance in Laboratory Diagnostics
Laboratories are legally required to comply with strict quality standards. International guidelines, such as those issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 15189), define requirements for the competence and quality of medical laboratories.
