- Women: 12.0 – 16.0 g/dL

- Polycythemia vera (a bone marrow disorder)

Clinical Significance and Treatment
Treatment for an abnormal hemoglobin level always depends on the underlying cause. Iron deficiency anemia is commonly treated with iron supplementation, either orally or intravenously. In cases of severe anemia, a blood transfusion may be necessary. A persistently elevated hemoglobin level is managed through therapeutic phlebotomy (blood removal), medication, or treatment of the underlying condition.
