Polio, also known as poliomyelitis or polio, is a highly contagious infectious disease caused by the poliovirus.
The poliovirus mainly affects the nervous system and can lead to permanent paralysis or even death in severe cases. It is usually transmitted via contaminated water or food, less frequently through direct contact with infected people. Typical symptoms are fever, headache, nausea and muscle weakness, whereby a severe course can lead to irreversible paralysis. Vaccination against polio is an effective form of protection, either as an oral vaccination with attenuated live viruses or as an injection vaccination with inactivated viruses. Thanks to worldwide immunisation campaigns, the disease has been almost eradicated in many regions, but there are still isolated outbreaks in areas with low vaccination rates.
