- Glans clitoridis: The visible tip of the clitoris, which is highly sensitive due to a dense concentration of nerve endings.
- Body (Corpus clitoridis): The cylindrical midsection that extends internally.
- Crura clitoridis: Two arm-like extensions that anchor the clitoris to the pubic bone.
- Vestibular bulbs: Two masses of erectile tissue flanking the vaginal opening that engorge during arousal.
- Prepuce (clitoral hood): A fold of skin that covers and protects the glans.
In adults, the total internal and external length of the clitoris averages approximately 9 to 11 centimeters, with most of the structure hidden within the body.
Function of the Clitoris
The primary function of the clitoris is to facilitate sexual arousal and pleasure. It contains more than 8,000 nerve endings, making it the most densely innervated organ in the human body. During sexual stimulation, the erectile tissue of the clitoris fills with blood, causing the organ to swell and become more sensitive. This process is comparable to penile erection in males, as both organs share the same embryological origin.

Proper functioning of the clitoris is closely linked to sexual health and overall well-being. Illness, injury, or psychological stress can impair sensitivity. Commonly discussed clinical topics include:

- Clitoral phimosis: A narrowing of the clitoral hood that may cause pain or inflammation.
- Female genital mutilation (FGM): A harmful practice involving the partial or total removal of the clitoris or other genital structures. It has no medical indication and violates bodily integrity.
Neurobiology and Sexual Dysfunction
Conditions such as diabetes mellitus, multiple sclerosis, or hormonal changes (e.g., during menopause) can affect nerve supply or blood flow to the clitoris, leading to reduced sensitivity or sexual dysfunction. Medical consultation is recommended in such cases.
Historical and Social Significance
The clitoris has been largely overlooked or misrepresented throughout medical history. Only in recent decades have modern imaging techniques such as MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) revealed the full extent of the organ. Today, education about clitoral anatomy is recognized as an essential component of sexual health literacy and women's healthcare.
