A healthy metabolism requires a balance between anabolism and catabolism. When anabolism predominates, tissue grows (e.g., muscle gain or fat accumulation). When catabolism predominates, tissue breaks down – which can occur during illness, malnutrition, or intense endurance exercise. The goal of a healthy lifestyle is to optimize this balance according to individual needs.
