Estrogen Synthesis

Conjugated estrogens excreted via bile into the intestine can be deconjugated by gut bacteria – specifically the estrobolome – using the enzyme beta-glucuronidase. This releases free estrogens that can be reabsorbed into the bloodstream. A disrupted gut microbiome (dysbiosis) may therefore contribute to elevated estrogen levels in the body.
